North Fork of Taylor Creek
Description: A rugged trail that takes you up the North Fork of Taylor Creek in Kolob Canyon
Distance: 2.4 Miles One Way
Difficulty: Moderate
Highest Elevation: 6,050 Feet Above Sea Level
Jurisdiction: Zion National Park
The trailhead for the North Fork of Taylor Creek is located at the same place as that of the Middle Fork of Taylor Creek. From there, you simply follow the Middle Fork until you reach the confluence with the North Fork.
The North Fork is not an official or maintained trail; but it is a beautiful hike that will take you into a lesser visited section of Kolob Canyon. As you begin following North Fork, you will see Horse Ranch Mountain to your northeast and the bright red walls of Tucupit Point to the south. You will follow the stream upwards into the canyon.
Since the area close by the stream is quite brushy, the trail will often stay above the stream; but you will still find yourself quite well surrounded with pinyon, juniper, sagebrush, ponderosa pine and manzanita. Along the way, there will be plenty of opportunities to follow little shortcut trails that make the way straighter rather than being bound to follow every twist and turn of the North Fork of Taylor Creek. There will be places toward the end of this hike where you will either have to make your way over large boulders or head up the steep banks to go around them. The trail will end at a point where there is a twenty foot obstacle that cannot be climbed. Though it is humanly possible to climb up around it; it is rather dangerous and is not a recommended option. Go back the way you came and enjoy the view of Zion.
